June is National Indigenous History Month / Pride Month

At RBPS, we take opportunities throughout the year to teach and celebrate the history, role models, leaders, accomplishments, and culture of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. During National Indigenous History Month, we will engage in school-wide and class specific learning opportunities related to Indigenous history, identity, and the path towards reconciliation.

In addition, June is also Pride Month, which is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, learn about the achievements and histories of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. This month, we focus on curriculum expectations linked to equity, human rights, and overcoming discrimination. OCDSB schools fly the Pride flag in June to reaffirm that everyone is welcome here.

Warm Weather and Air Quality

As we move through June, we can expect more hot days ahead. Students will continue to spend time outside at recess, and will stay indoors only if Ottawa Public Health issues a heat warning (humidex of 40 degrees Celsius or more for at least two consecutive days) or a heat emergency (humidex of 45 or more or situational factors).

We recommend that students have lightweight and loose clothing to wear outdoors, including a hat. We also recommend that students have sunscreen, and that younger students be taught how to apply their own sunscreen. Taking a break in the shade during recess is also recommended.

In addition, last week’s smoke from forest fires resulted in an Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) rating of High on Friday, June 6 during the PD Day. We will continue to monitor the AQHI rating, and will follow OCDSB procedures on limiting outdoor activities, or keeping students indoors, and will share that information via email.

Staff Appreciation Brunch: Friday, June 13

Robert Bateman Public School is lucky to have amazing teachers, EA’s, ECE’s, custodial staff and office staff.  Our school has had a lovely tradition of thanking these wonderful individuals with a special potluck Brunch at the end of the school year.

This year the RBPS School Council will  hold the appreciation brunch on Friday June 13th, 2025.  Do not miss this opportunity to show our teachers and staff how much you appreciated all the work they have done for our children.

We need your help in order to make this a success, so we are asking for you to provide the delicious food!

We are seeking hot and cold dishes, sandwiches, raw fruits, veggies, cake, meatballs, curries, samosas, drinks (hot and/or cold) or your favorite recipe.

Things to remember:

  • On June 13th, the day of the event, there will be a table at the entrance of the school where you can drop your food dish between 8:15 and 9:30: a volunteer will be there to receive your dish, otherwise please leave your dish on the table. You can also send the food item with your child.
  • Make sure you label the container/serving utensils with your child’s name so we can return your items to you.
  • Please label the food (i.e. vegetarian) to help with those with dietary restrictions.
  • Please let us know your contribution by emailing sc-robertbatemanps@ocdsb.ca by Wednesday morning, so we can plan accordingly.
  • Please send an email If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help setup.

Thank you for your support!

RBPS Activities (In every Banner, we highlight a different activity at RBPS.)

Activity Name: RBPS Ultimate Frisbee and Orienteering

What is it?: We had some active and engaging activities last week here at RBPS. Our K-6 students recently embarked on exciting orienteering adventures, learning valuable navigation skills and exploring our school grounds and Elizabeth Manley Park. It was wonderful to see their teamwork and problem-solving abilities shine as they searched for markers and completed their courses.

Meanwhile, our upper-primary and junior students have been showing off their incredible athletic prowess and teamwork during our recent ultimate frisbee sessions. They've embraced the spirit of the game, demonstrating sportsmanship, throwing, and catching skills.

A huge thank you to all the students for their enthusiastic participation and to our staff and parent volunteers for making these enriching activities possible!
