Bateman Bobcat Banner

Monday, September 27, 2021

As we arrive at the end of September, we would like to thank all of our Bateman Bobcat parents, guardians, and students for your support in making this such a smooth back-to-school startup.

Daily Screening

Please note that teachers will no longer be checking students daily screening verification every morning. However, all families must still conduct a COVID-19 screening every morning to determine if your child(ren) should attend school that day. The screening tool is available in multiple languages: English, French, Swahili, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Somali.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On Thursday, September 30, students and staff at Robert Bateman School will join people across Canada in observing National Truth and Reconciliation Day. We will hold a (virtual) assembly, in addition to other activities throughout the week. Our learning as a school about the legacy of residential schools and their aftermath has been ongoing, and will continue leading up to September 30th and beyond. We have made use of age-appropriate resources provided by the OCDSB Indigenous Education team, and our librarian, Ms Green, continues to build our collection of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit resources. We will share more information on our upcoming activities as we get closer to September 30.

October 5 ‘Meet the Staff’ Event

On October 5, the staff at Robert Bateman School will host a virtual ‘Meet the Staff’ event for all parents and guardians. This is an opportunity to (virtually) meet your child(ren)’s educators, and take a peek inside their classroom(s). Different educators will host their events in different ways; there may be a pre-recorded video you can watch, a live (synchronous) event you may join, or something different. Whatever the format, we look forward to virtually welcoming you into your community school. An email listing all the events and links for each class will be shared with you later this week.

COVID-19 Home-Test Kits Available at RBPS

The City of Ottawa and OPH are working to make it easier for families to conduct COVID 19 tests. Robert Bateman School has been given a supply of take-home testing kits, which are available for all Robert Bateman students and their families. If your child(ren) or any member of your household requires a COVID test, you may pick up a test kit from school, perform the test outside the school, and drop the completed test back off at school. Tests will be picked up daily by OPH, and results will be available online. There are easy to follow instructions, and those who have used the tests so far say they are quick and easy.

RBPS School Council

The Annual General Meeting and first School Council meeting of the 2021-2022 school year took place on Thursday, September 23. The next (virtual) meeting will be on Thursday, October 14 at 6:30 PM. We encourage all parents / guardians to consider attending a School Council meeting.

Arrival Time

Thanks to all the parents / guardians who support their child(ren) to arrive at school before 8:30 AM. Our opening exercises (O Canada and daily announcements) take place at 10:20, just before first recess, so that students can jump right into learning as soon as they arrive. When students arrive late, they miss the first part of the lesson, and interrupt instructional time. We appreciate your support in helping your child(ren) to arrive on-time.

Robert Bateman Snack Program

Robert Bateman will continue to provide a snack program every morning for students to ensure that they are well fed and ready to learn. The program has been approved by the OCDSB and Ottawa Public Health in collaboration with the Ottawa Network for Education. Foods provided meet the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) Student Nutrition Guidelines and focus on fruit/vegetables, protein and whole grain foods.

This snack program starts on Wednesday September 29th; please note, students should still come to school with a lunch, this is simply a small supplement to a healthy lunch. Please complete this form if you would like your child(ren) to participate.

Litterless Lunch

A reminder that one of our safety protocols for COVID 19 is that all students are asked to bring litterless lunches, so all wrappings and waste is to be brought back home. We appreciate your support in helping your child(ren) to follow this protocol.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety at RBPS

Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority. The crossing guards who work near RBPS to keep our students safe have asked that students and parents cross at the marked crosswalks, rather than diagonally across intersections. In addition, we would ask that parents picking up students not perform u-turns in front of the school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
