Extracurriculars at Robert Bateman School

On Tuesday, October 25,  the Junior Cross Country team took part in the SouthEast Regional Meet. Over 30 runners participated, and Robert Bateman brought back a number of ribbons for top ten finishes, including a first-place finish by Naya in Mme Boudreau’s class, out of a field of almost 200 runners! Thank you to the Cross-Country coaching team of Mme Irus, Ms Petten, Ms Horning, and Mme Boudreau for all your work over the past few weeks in preparing the team for their meet.

Thanks also to Mr Hirst and Ms Green for running the Lego Club. Every week, students in a specific grade are invited to the library to work on Lego projects. The Lego club is part of our Library MakerSpace, which is an important part of our library learning commons.

Robert Bateman School Climate and Inclusion Committee

One of our most important goals is to build a school community that is caring, supportive, and inclusive for all students. In order to support our ongoing work towards meeting this goal, we will be launching a School Climate and Inclusion Committee. This committee will include myself (Mr G.)  and a mixture of teachers, EAs. ECEs, and parents). The purpose of the committee is to look at how we build an inclusive and caring school community at RBPS, and how we can improve. We will be looking at data from the student surveys, in addition to other data sources.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday, November 2 from 3:15 - 4:15, with subsequent meetings about every two months after that, for a total of between 4 - 5 meetings for the year. If you are interested in being part of this committee, please respond to this email, or reach out to Mr. G. by telephone at 613-737-3169.

School Photo Day: Thursday, November 10

The RBPS School Photo Day will be on Thursday, November 10. Students are asked to avoid wearing green on this day, because this can interfere with the green screen used to provide parents with a choice of background. We are also pleased that class-photos will be returning this year. Parents will receive a personalized link to view their child(ren)’s photos, with the option to purchase prints. All students will receive a free class photo: we hope that all students will be able to attend on this date.

RBPS School Council: Thursday, November 10

All parents are invited to attend the RBPS School Council meeting on Thursday November 10, 2022 at 6:30 pm in the school library. This meeting will use a hybrid (in-person and virtual) format; any parent who would like to attend virtually is invited to send an email to [email protected] in order to receive the meeting link. An agenda will be shared with parents in the next week.

Remembrance Day observed at RBPS

During the next two weeks leading up to Remembrance Day, students will be learning at an age-appropriate level about the sacrifices made by veterans, and why we honour their memory. On Friday, November 11, students and staff at RBPS will take part in a virtual Remembrance Day (start time TBD). Parents are invited to attend this ceremony - further details, including start time, will be shared early next week.

Walking School Bus - Spots Still Available

Did you know that RBPS has a Walking School Bus? The Walking School Bus (WSB) promotes active transportation and healthy living. Students walk to school with a group of 10 peers and a professional leader, following a specific route and schedule.

Similar to an adult crossing guard, each WSB has a paid leader who has been trained by the Ottawa Safety Council, screened and first-aid certified to walk with your child to school.

Our WSB starts at Blohm Dr. and Taj Crt. and follows Blohm all the way to RBPS. If you live near this route, your child is welcome to join the RBPS WSB. Please note that your child will not lose their seat on the yellow bus if they join the WSB.

Please follow this link if you would like to register for the RBPS WSB. Walking to school is a safe, convenient, healthy and fun way for your child to travel to school with friends. It helps them get the daily physical activity they need to be healthy and concentrate better at school.

In-Person Breakfast Program Returns to RBPS

The in-person breakfast program is up-and-running.  Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the small gym. Typical menus may include fresh fruit, cereal, juice, toast, jam, cheese, pancakes, milk and other dairy products. Research has shown that children who eat a good breakfast are better equipped to learn and to focus.

If you would like your child to participate in the Breakfast Program, please complete this google form. If you have questions, please reply to this email, or call the school at 613-737-3169. Please note that all students in Kindergarten - Grade 6, including students in the EDP program, are welcome to take part in the Breakfast Program.

The Breakfast Program also needs volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please provide your name and contact information within the google form.

Occasional Lunch Monitors Wanted

School lunch monitors are RBPS parents and community members who work about 2 hours per day (10:30 AM - 11:15 AM, and 1:15 PM - 2:00 PM) to help supervise students at lunch and recess. All lunch monitors are required to have a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) and complete OCDSB training on safety procedures, supporting positive behaviour and preventing bullying, and other online training. We are currently in need of lunch monitors who can work on an occasional basis (a few times a week) on short notice. If you are interested in learning more about becoming an occasional lunch monitor at RBPS, please call the school office.
