Remembrance Day / Veterans’ Week at RBPS
Thank you to the staff and students who organised and participated in this meaningful ceremony to remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve.
Progress Reports Available on Wednesday, November 20
At RBPS, our educators communicate with parents throughout the year. This communication includes email updates, phone calls, and in-person meetings.
Three times per year, educators send home written reports in accordance with Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines.
This week, parents / guardians of Kindergarten students will receive an ‘Initial Observations Report.’ This report has a summary of observations of your child’s learning since the start of the school year and provides early evidence of growth in their learning. More information on the Kindergarten Initial Observations and Communication of Learning is available here.
For Parents / Guardians of children in grades 1-6, your child will receive a ‘Progress Report’ next week. The progress report is designed to share information with parents about their child’s general progress early in the school year, focusing on the development of the learning skills and work habits, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards their achievement of the curriculum expectations. Progress reports will not include marks or letter grades, but rather progress will be reported by indicating if the student is “progressing with difficulty”, “progressing well”, or “progressing very well”. This report is intended to provide parents with an early indication of their child’s progress.
For more information about assessment, evaluation and reporting, please see the OCDSB Parent Guide to Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting.
Parent / Teacher Interviews: November 28 - 29
Later this week, all parents will receive an email inviting them to sign up for a parent-teacher interview on either Thursday, November 28 between 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, or on Friday, November 29 between 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM. This is an opportunity to meet with your child(ren)’s teacher(s) to discuss the Initial Observations Report / Progress Report, ask any questions you may have, and discuss how you can work together to support your child(ren) moving forward. Please note that although this time is specifically dedicated for parents and teachers to meet, parents are welcome to reach out to their child(ren)’s teachers at any time throughout the year to discuss their child(ren)’s progress.
At-Home Literacy Support Information Session: November 28 - 29
Parents who are coming in for interviews on either Thursday, November 28 between 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, or on Friday, November 29 between 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM are invited to check out our At-Home Literacy Support kiosks, which will be set up in the library. Families who do not have interviews scheduled, but would still like to drop in and check out the kiosks are welcome as well during these times. These kiosks will provide more information about how families can support their children at home in developing phonemic awareness, basic phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension skills, all part of the foundational literacy skills essential for reading. Information will be provided in both English and Arabic.

Dental Screening at RBPS on December 5-6
Lynne Bérubé, a registered dental hygienist (RDH) with Ottawa Public Health will provide a dental screening on December 5-6 for students in JK, SK, Grades 2, 4 at RBPS . If your child’s grade is not selected, but you wish for the dental hygienist to see him/her, please advise the school.
The dental screening is a no-touch technique: the RDH uses a disposable tongue depressor to look at your child’s mouth. This short visual assessment helps identify the need for dental care (infection, tooth decay, broken teeth or more). Appropriate measures are in place to limit the spread of illnesses, including hand hygiene and personal protective equipment for the RDH.
Afterwards, your child will be given a report to take home which will explain the results of the dental screening. Some students may need follow-up dental screenings as needed. Some families may be eligible for free dental care. THE SCREENING DOES NOT REPLACE REGULAR DENTAL VISITS WITH YOUR FAMILY DENTIST.
This dental screening is offered in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards, Oral Health Protocol 2021 from the Ontario Ministry of Health. Personal health information collected during the screening will be used for the purposes of delivering, administering, and managing screening services and for statistical purposes provided under Sections 5 and 7 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act (as amended) and the Ontario Public Health Standards (2018).
Information may be used and shared among Ottawa Public Health authorized employees only in the provision of dental services. Questions concerning the dental screening, how to exclude your child from the dental screening for this school year, the collection and use of this information should be directed to the Supervisor of Dental Health Promotion, Ottawa Public Health, 400-1580 Merivale Rd., Ottawa, ON, tel.: 613-580-2424, ext 26376.

RBPS Safe and Accepting School Committee
Tuesday, October 29 was the first meeting of the 24/25 Robert Bateman Safe and Accepting School Committee. This committee, which is required in all schools in Ontario, is made up of Mr. G. and Mrs. Fuller, representatives of different staff groups (teachers, EAs, ECEs), and parents. The various committee members provide their perspectives and input on how we can ensure that RBPS is safe, inclusive, as well as providing input in shaping our 'Student Mental Health and Well-Being Plan.'
We also looked at the results of the most recent ‘Valuing Voices’ parent survey, in which over 170 parents and caregivers provided their input into how Robert Bateman is doing in terms of Engagement, Environment, Safety, and Well-Being. Overall, our results were largely positive, deviating from the overall OCDSB results by only one or two percentage points in various categories, and scoring higher than Board averages in the categories of inclusion and representation.
Some of the recommendations of the committee are:
- to proactively teach the difference between conflict, unkind behavior, and bullying, and how to respond appropriately to each;
- to continue our use of ‘MindUp’ in Kindergarten - Grade 6 as a tool for increased self-regulation and community building;
- to create additional opportunities for school-wide
- to find opportunities for parent information nights on topics of interest, such as the session from 23-24 with Dr. Lee on student self-regulation.
The next meeting of the Safe and Accepting School Committee will be sometime in February: stay tuned for more information if you would like to be part of this committee.
Voluntary $20 RBPS Student Fee
Robert Bateman PS invites parents/caregivers to contribute a voluntary student fee of $20. These fees are used to support additional activities to enrich the student programs, such as guest speakers and special presentations, and to subsidize field trips. Our request is for a voluntary donation of $20 per student (up to a family maximum of $50). This fee can be sent electronically using Schoolcashonline, or sent as cash / check with your child(ren). Thank you in advance for considering this request.
RBPS Activities (In every Banner, we highlight a different activity at RBPS.)
Activity Name: MindUp
What is it?: In every class from Kindergarten - Grade 6, students are learning about their brain, and how to focus their attention, use brain breaks as a means to manage stress, act with empathy, and build resilience in the face of challenge. The MindUp program is evidence-based, and research has shown that students participating in the MindUP curriculum have demonstrated reduced aggression and increased prosocial behaviours. Try asking your child(ren) a bit about their brain, and the role of the Prefrontal Cortex, the Amygdala, and the Hippocampus plays in managing their emotions.
