Drop-Off and Pick-up On Inclement Weather Days
Now that December has begun, we can expect more winter weather. On days when weather may result in unsafe driving conditions, the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) will post bus and van cancellations here by 7:00 AM. On days when bus and van transportation is canceled, the school remains open, and parents are invited to drive the child(ren) to school, and pick them up at the end of the day. If transportation is canceled, parents are welcome to use the turning circle to drop off / pick up their children; please ensure that you drive very slowly when entering / leaving the turning circle.
Also, for parents who are driving their child(ren) to school, please note that supervision does not begin until 8:15, and ends at 3:15, so please do not drop off your child(ren) before - or pick them up after - these times.
Arrival in AM
Thank you to all the parents who have made an effort to ensure your children arrive before 8:30. The decreased lates have been noticed, and appreciated! In most classes, the first hour of the day is either Language or Math, and arriving even 10 minutes late means students will miss key instruction for that day’s lesson, in addition to disturbing lessons already in progress. Your cooperation in this is much appreciated.
Dental Screening at RBPS on December 5-6
Lynne Bérubé, a registered dental hygienist (RDH) with Ottawa Public Health will provide a dental screening on December 5-6 for students in JK, SK, Grades 2, 4 at RBPS . If your child’s grade is not selected, but you wish for the dental hygienist to see him/her, please advise the school.
The dental screening is a no-touch technique: the RDH uses a disposable tongue depressor to look at your child’s mouth. This short visual assessment helps identify the need for dental care (infection, tooth decay, broken teeth or more). Appropriate measures are in place to limit the spread of illnesses, including hand hygiene and personal protective equipment for the RDH.
Afterwards, your child will be given a report to take home which will explain the results of the dental screening. Some students may need follow-up dental screenings as needed. Some families may be eligible for free dental care. THE SCREENING DOES NOT REPLACE REGULAR DENTAL VISITS WITH YOUR FAMILY DENTIST.
This dental screening is offered in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards, Oral Health Protocol 2021 from the Ontario Ministry of Health. Personal health information collected during the screening will be used for the purposes of delivering, administering, and managing screening services and for statistical purposes provided under Sections 5 and 7 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act (as amended) and the Ontario Public Health Standards (2018).
Information may be used and shared among Ottawa Public Health authorized employees only in the provision of dental services. Questions concerning the dental screening, how to exclude your child from the dental screening for this school year, the collection and use of this information should be directed to the Supervisor of Dental Health Promotion, Ottawa Public Health, 400-1580 Merivale Rd., Ottawa, ON, tel.: 613-580-2424, ext 26376.

Multi-Faith Prayer Space at RBPS
At Robert Bateman PS we are proud to offer a learning community that is welcoming to all of our students. One of the ways we build an inclusive community is through our multi-faith prayer room for Grade 5 and 6 students.
The practice of having a multi-faith prayer space at RBPS started several years ago as a student-led initiative. After consulting with a number of parents of different faith backgrounds, it was decided that Grade 5/6 was the right age level for participation. Any Grade 5 or 6 student who would like to attend is welcome to do so. The guidelines for use of this space were created by the students, and includes rules such as arriving on time, not making noise or being silly, and respecting differences in how different people pray.
On a personal note, I am impressed by the responsibility the students demonstrated in taking ownership of this initiative, and working through their recesses to create the guidelines. Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions.
Voluntary $20 RBPS Student Fee
Robert Bateman PS invites parents/caregivers to contribute a voluntary student fee of $20. These fees are used to support additional activities to enrich the student programs, such as guest speakers and special presentations, and to subsidize field trips. Our request is for a voluntary donation of $20 per student (up to a family maximum of $50). This fee can be sent electronically using Schoolcashonline, or sent as cash / check with your child(ren). Thank you in advance for considering this request.
RBPS Activities (In every Banner, we highlight a different activity at RBPS.)

What is it?: During Parent-Teacher Interviews last week, and during the School Council Family Movie night on Friday, At-Home Literacy Support kiosks, were / will be set up in the library.
